Real wage trend (CPI-adjusted)

Comparing nominal annual income with inflation-adjusted real value (base: 2020 = 100). CPI data from jpcost.keydrop.net.

NominalReal (2020 value)Axis: ¥10k

Real wage is computed as: nominal × (baseYear CPI / current year CPI). When real < nominal, inflation has outpaced wage growth.

Wonder how far your salary goes?

Income alone doesn't tell the whole story. jpcost.keydrop.net estimates monthly cost of living across 67 Japanese cities using official CPI data — pair it with your salary benchmark for the full picture.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this data come from?

Japan's official Basic Survey on Wage Structure (賃金構造基本統計調査), published annually by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare via e-Stat.

Why does my exact filter combination show no data?

The wage census only publishes aggregate cells with enough sample size. Try removing one or more filters — jpsalary will automatically fall back to the closest available cell and mark the result as 'estimated'.

How accurate is the annual income estimate?

Annual income = (monthly cash earnings × 12) + annual bonus. This is the official methodology of the wage census. Values are nominal (not inflation-adjusted) unless you enable the CPI-adjusted view.

Are bonuses included?

Yes. The 'annual income' figure uses the wage census definition: (regular monthly earnings × 12) + annual bonus/special payments paid in the previous year. The 'Monthly total' card shows just the monthly portion (excluding bonus).

What is the difference between 'monthly total' and 'monthly base'?

'Monthly total' (きまって支給する現金給与額) includes overtime and other regular allowances. 'Monthly base' (所定内給与額) excludes overtime — it's the scheduled portion only. The difference reflects average overtime hours in that segment.

How are foreign currency values computed?

FX rates come from the Frankfurter API (ECB-based, base = JPY), updated weekly. The conversion is: annual income (JPY) × rate. We don't apply PPP (purchasing power parity) adjustment — that's planned for a later phase.

Why are prefecture data only available for some years?

Prefecture-level data in the wage census is published every 2-3 years, not annually. For 2020-2023, only 2020 and 2023 have prefecture breakdowns. National and industry-level data is published every year.
